BCOA - About basenjis

We are a small breeding program that strives to produce puppies with the goal of improving upon the breed, as defined by the AKC written breed standard. We select dogs based on structure, temperament and health. We generally have a maximum of one litter per year, and do not breed every year. I will rarely but occasionally have an older puppy or adult to place. I maintain a wait-list for upcoming litters.

We test our adult basenjis for the genetic health disorders as recommended by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). This includes carrier status for Fanconi disorder and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Animals can be carriers for these diseases, which means they will never be affected, but cannot be bred to another carrier. We also test eyes through the Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER), thyroid disorder after one year old, and x-ray hips for hip dysplasia after two years old.

The current price for puppies is $2,500. A deposit of $500 (applied towards the total cost) is required to hold a puppy. The deposit is non-refundable if the buyer backs out. In the event I am not able to fulfil the deposit, it will be returned to the buyer or given the buyer the option to be held with priority for the next litter.

Puppies are raised in our home, using socialization protocols outlined in the Puppy Culture program. I encourage all new owners to purchase this program, as the socialization will need to continue after you take your puppy home.

Puppies will have a microchip placed for identification, their first set of vaccinations (distemper/parvo), AKC registration, and preliminary veterinary exam before going home. They will be ready to leave between 10-12 weeks. All puppies will have introductions to housebreaking and crate training.

All new owners will be required to sign a contract, which will be provided for review before purchase. All animals who are not show or breeding prospects will be required to be spayed or neutered. We recommend waiting to spay or neuter until after 18 months of age to allow time for proper development. In the event an owner needs to surrender their basenji at any point throughout their life, they are required to return to me, as the breeder.

I am active in showing in AKC conformation. We regularly have show quality puppies in our litters, and may require these basenjis to be shown to their AKC championship by either myself, a professional handler, or their owner. I am happy to mentor owners who have a new interest in showing, or connecting them with someone in their area. We also encourage getting involved in the vast array of dog activities and basenjis love spending time and being active with their humans!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any further questions! I am happy to meet with prospective owners at one of the many dog shows I travel to around the country, or at my home in Dallas, TX.
